Nils Frahm has posted this on his Facebook page:

This page is soon not going to be active anymore. After giving it serious thought, I have concluded that Facebook will be the first of many social media accounts I am going to close. [...] The picture repeatedly drawn to me is one where I cannot afford to leave Facebook because of the access to fans it represents. It feels like I'm being held hostage by a force out of my control. [...] I am no longer willing to give in to such perverse arguments

I have been thinking about this for a while. I do feel like Facebook is holding me hostage, keeping me "connected" to 900+ people who hear from me somewhat rarely (I will comment another time on the low frequency of my posts), but doing so at the cost of being an extremely unpleasant site to use, and also being actively harmful to its users.

I don't have Nils Frahm's audience (205k+ people as I write this) to make such a bold move, but 1) I don't think I need to and 2) that means I haven't that much to lose either. While now is not the time for me to go, this is certainly on the horizon.

After deleting my personal Facebook account a while back, I'm thinking about leaving Instagram next. Not a great situation but I feel I need to distance myself from Facebook as much as I possibly can. The internet of 2019 - constantly tracking your every move, and shapeshifting to present you with "engaging" content with phenomenal disregard for integrity and hard facts, facilitating that even by an atom of contribution, is not what I want to be doing.

Right now, it's a matter of time.

Do join my mailing list for very slow updates, or follow esem.bandcamp.com for just the release announcements, or track soundcloud/eesn if you like.
